Speed and data are the edge

Flash Boys

Information advantage wins. Detecting in five minutes versus five days is a different risk environment.

Ostensibly this is a book about high-frequency trading. I read it as a book about information advantage.

In the markets Lewis describes, tiny differences in how quickly participants could see information and act on it created enormous advantages. Security increasingly works the same way. An organization that detects malicious behavior in five minutes operates in a different risk environment from one that detects it five days later. A team that can reconstruct exactly what happened during an incident has an advantage over one assembling evidence across disconnected systems.

As AI compresses the time required to discover, build, exploit, and iterate, that advantage matters more. Speed without visibility is chaos. Visibility without the ability to act is observation. The advantage comes from combining the two.
